| 4006 | Armed merchant vessel. Large scratch built model of merchant vessel. The model was built in the 1930's and is plank on frame over a solid hull. The model is fully rigged according to practices of the time with (3) masts and standing and running rigging. Rigging is held with lanyards, deadeyes and wood blocks. On her deck she has several handmade wooden cannons on trucks and (8) carronades. The deck is planked in walnut and has cabins, wheel, wheel house, grates, hatches, windlass, capstan and life boats. She flies a large American flag and contains a beautifully carved stern gallery. The model sits on a mahogany baseboard and is supported by (4) cast dolphin pedestals. The model was intended to be displayed to be displayed in a dark mahogany case with wood columns. Unfortunately, the prior owner died during construction and the case requires glass. | 4008 | 19th Century U.S.S. Consititution, very rare. This scratch built ship model from 1896 has a carved hollowed hull and was built by W. G. Washburn of Boston. The model has black topsides with a white waist and a green bottom. It appears that the hull was painted with a wash or dye and not with today's oil or water based paints. The deck is scribed and fitted with numberous details including grates, pin and fife rails, ship boats on davits, ladders, cannons on sleds, capstan, binnacle, stovepipe, bell with many other details. The model is rigged appropriately according to practices of the time and is complete with all standing and running rigging, flags and pennants and bone or ivory inscribed nameplate. The model is mounted on a teak baseboard and presented on a pair of antique brass pedestals. The model is intended for presentation in a light mahogany case with wood columns. The case has an interior trim of contrasting wood inlay with sutherland corners. The case is contemporary and needs glass. The owner of the model was in the process of building the case when he unfortunately died and it now is being offered by descent. 26"l. x 12"h., Provenance: W.G. This is an outstanding eagle reflected by both the quality of craftsmanship and the age patination. The eagle has highly incised feathering in the wings, neck and head. There are crossed flags that not only drape, but also have detailed carving of fringe. In the center of the plaque, the eagle clutches an American shield with a single star symbolic of Washington's continental army. Both flags and shield are draped over a scrolled carving of the bill of rights. The back of the eagle has (2) mounting brackets with old nails. 20"l. x 10"h. | 4095 | 19th Century carved sailor whirligig, exceptionally carved and painted whirligig of a Jack Tar sailor. The sailor has a painted face with a wood nose and painted mustache and goatee. He has painted eyebrows with a soulful expression. The shirt is black with white painted trousers and black painted boots. He is wearing a Jack Tar style hat with a copper ribbon. He is typical of a sailor of his time. Painted on the back of his neck is the date "1844". A thin rod which travels through the shoulders and allows the whirligig to be mobile and supports the sailors outstretched arms. His arms are set on a metal rod and incised at the end to simulate hands and each hand is drilled to hold a paddle. The paddles are copper sheathed at the grips and are made of wood. The figure sits one natural wood original base, 24"h. x 13"w. Provenance: The Sailor's Home, North Street Boston, Ma. Estate of Robert Oliver, Naval Architect. | 4113 | Original hardwood carved plaque with oil portrait of Captain Isaac Hull of U.S.S. Constitution, (1773-1843). The portrait of the Captain is surrounded by a brass porthole in the center of the plaque and flanked by relief carved American eagles. Across the top of the plaque is a naval ribbon that runs the entire length of the plaque. The initials "I H" are painted at the base of the portrait. The artist has also depicted the Constitution in battle over the left shoulder of the portrait. Framing the top of the plaque is had wrought brass. All carving, painting and brass work is original. Original varnish has been preserved. Dimensions: 36"l. x 15"h. Provenance: The Plaque was originally presented to Commodore Isaac Hull by craftsmen at the Portsmouth Naval shipyard during his command circa 1815 and prior to his assuming command of the Washington Naval shipyard. On the front is an American eagle holding a shield with arrows in one claw and an olive branch in the other. ( This type of Eagle with shield represents the First Infantry Regiment, which under the name First American Regiment, was raised by Washington in 1784 ). At the bottom of the shield is the signature "Dean" which we believe to be that of W.L. Dean from Massachusetts (1854-1912). Dean also painted George Washington on horseback on each side of the tin. On the top of the lid are the words National Biscuit Co., with the number 50 in the center. We believe that the 50 refers to the number of biscuits that were originally in the tin box.
